The Ohio Artist Registry (OAR) is an exciting opportunity for artists to share their work, connect with the creative community, and establish an online presence—all on a free, virtual platform! The OAR encourages artists working in all art forms, throughout Ohio and beyond,  to create a profile, which allows them to better promote themselves and their work. Being listed in the OAR provides artists with new opportunities to share their work with clients, galleries, patrons, and audiences. A listing in the OAR does not confer an endorsement, approval, or verification by the Ohio Arts Council.

Bio

Judith Huacuja is a painter, writer, and educator who holds a PhD in Latin American Art History from the University of California.  She is a Chicana artist who creates a variety of socially expressive landscapes. Using acrylic paint, photography, and mixed media on paper and canvas, her scenes depict troubling human impacts on the environment.  As well, Huacuja creates views onto sacred geographies that positively shape human consciousness.  Her art works have been shown in Houston (Diverse Works, Lawndale Art Center, and Blaffer Gallery), in Santa Barbara (University of California), in Dayton (Rosewood Art Center, The Co’s Art Fair, and Dayton Society of Artists), and places in between.  She has developed courses in, and has lectured extensively on Art Activism, Latin American, African American, and non-Western contemporary art histories.  As an arts scholar, she has researched across the disciplines of Chicano, Latino and African American art histories. Her published works explore the cultural and spiritual histories of African American and Latinx art of the Midwest. Her publications discuss the art of Willis Bing Davis, Curtis Barnes Sr., Los Dialoguistas, Yolanda Lopez, Celia Herrera Rodriguez, Robert Campbell, and others. Her research grants include the College Art Association, the Smithsonian Institution, UC MEXUS, Ohio Humanities Council, Ohio Arts Council, Ohio Humanities Council, and CultureWorks.

Artist Statement

Judith Huacuja is a Latina painter creating socially expressive landscapes. Using acrylics, photography, and mixed media, her scenes depict human impacts on the environment.  Huacuja also creates views onto sacred geographies that positively shape human consciousness.  In her semi-abstract artwork, color and symbols narrate contemporary scenes both rural and urban.  These places reach across the US, from the expansive Southwest into the riverways of the Midwest. Huacuja’s art has been shown in Houston, Santa Barbara, Dayton, and places in between.
