This technique emphasizes the tension between the industrial subject matter and the elemental, charred nature of the medium.

This functional sculpture serves as a ritual vessel and a historical reflection on the “341 lb daily quota” requirement imposed during the 1840s-1860s era of American enslavement. The glass features a rhythmic, hand-painted pattern inspired by Kente cloth, shrouded in a hand-burned leather wrap. A significant structure where the “missing finger” acts as a silent witness to the brutal physical retaliation faced by those who fell short of the mark.
The piece utilizes rising incense smoke as a metaphorical prayer, bridging the gap between ancestral trauma and creative evolution.

Conceived as a “modern relic,” this work centers on a hand-tooled leather medallion depicting a volcanic eruption, representing the elemental force that birthed the work from a structural fissure. Returning to this medium after a twenty-year hiatus, the artist utilizes a pointillist pigment application and leather-to-glass “stitching” to bridge the gap between ancient symbolism and contemporary form. Crowned with a “Tree of Life” emblem, the work explores the concept of permanence: the messages and spirits that remain even as the world’s tectonic plates shift.

This sculpture is a journey from breakage to beauty. After the glass snapped during carving, the artist applied the philosophy of Kintsugi to honor its history. Using glass beads from around the world to “sew” the pieces back together, a new bond was created where there was once a fracture. The work is finished with hand-worked leather and acrylic finish, standing as a map of its own survival.

This allows the sculptural forms to exist in the viewer’s physical space, utilizing shifting natural light and shadows as part of the composition.
