The Ohio Artist Registry (OAR) is an exciting opportunity for artists to share their work, connect with the creative community, and establish an online presence—all on a free, virtual platform! The OAR encourages artists working in all art forms, throughout Ohio and beyond, to create a profile, which allows them to better promote themselves and their work. Being listed in the OAR provides artists with new opportunities to share their work with clients, galleries, patrons, and audiences. A listing in the OAR does not confer an endorsement, approval, or verification by the Ohio Arts Council.

Bio
I am an artist based out of east Columbus near Whitehall, where I create my art as well as work full-time as a Peer Recovery Supporter supporting others in early addiction recovery and attempting to bring creative coping skills to my clients and the recovery community. I am an acrylic painter, but can also crochet, cross stitch, embroider, mixed media. I was lucky enough to be chosen in 2023 and 2024 for the GCAC Individual Artist grant, as well as Ohio Arts Council ADA grant in 2024. I have done a number of smaller banners and paintings for Lighthouse Behavioral Health Solutions, as well as creating a BLM mural for Big Fun Toy Shop in 2019. I have participated as a vendor at SoHud Art and Vintage Market. My paintings were featured in an art exhibition for the Day of the Dead Festival at the Green Lawn Mausoleum in October 2023 and 2024 and then transported to Priscilla R. Tyson Cultural Arts center and the Global Gallery. I have had my paintings in the 2024 Ohio Art League Thumb Box show, as well as at the Open Door Studio for a “This Inspires That” Collaborative exhibition. I was honored to be apart of a side by side solo Exhibition at Fresh AIR Gallery from July 19th -September 20th 2024 alongside Juliana Sofranko. I am currently working on new pieces, and am willing to take on any commision work.

Artist Statement
Destiny Surber is a Columbus Ohio based artist with lived experience in substance abuse and mental illness.
From a young age, Destiny Surber found solace in creating and expressing herself in ways words couldn’t capture. Early on, the act of making art provided an outlet for the emotions she couldn’t otherwise articulate. As her mental health deteriorated, she struggled with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations which eventually led to addiction. During these dark years, life felt like an endless descent into despair with no escape in sight.
However, through recovery and mental health support, art became a lifeline. Painting offered a way to disconnect from painful triggers and find moments of peace and happiness, guiding her back toward sobriety and stability. Through her own journey of healing, Destiny rediscovered the joy and purpose of creation.
Now working as a Peer Recovery Supporter, she shares her passion for art with others, introducing clients to the positive impact creative expression can have on recovery. Through painting, she help others discover tools for mindfulness, discipline, patience, and personal growth.
While Destiny explores various forms of artistic expression, painting remains her deepest connection. Drawn to vibrant colors, nature, and whimsical themes, her work tells a deeply personal story of transformation and healing. Each piece not only reflects her journey but also serves as a source of joy, reminding them of the power of creation in overcoming life’s darkest moments.
