The Ohio Artist Registry (OAR) is an exciting opportunity for artists to share their work, connect with the creative community, and establish an online presence—all on a free, virtual platform! The OAR encourages artists working in all art forms, throughout Ohio and beyond,  to create a profile, which allows them to better promote themselves and their work. Being listed in the OAR provides artists with new opportunities to share their work with clients, galleries, patrons, and audiences. A listing in the OAR does not confer an endorsement, approval, or verification by the Ohio Arts Council.

Artist Statement

At present, I am investigating two lines of work: my “Mathematician” series and my “Heritage” series. Both series share the same media (acrylic on canvas) and techniques, but have different motivations.

My “Mathematician” series has evolved over the past 17 years. During that time, I experimented with multi-value progressions of single colors, multi-hue progressions, and, presently, black/white progressions. Similarly, my compositions have evolved from gridworks parallel to the canvas’s edge to grids of varying angles, and from gridworks filling the entire canvas to grids within limited planes. While gridworks should provide a sense of order, morphing and various angles removes that certainty. Color and composition produce the increasingly complex, dense, and ambiguous spaces which I seek to create.

My “Heritage” series is a more recent avenue of inquiry. Developed during the pandemic – when museums were inaccessible – this series is my exploration of our regional artists’ “Op Art” style. I use the technique of “fluting,” used to create a cylindrical space or a support structure for progressing from one color to another. At this time, my paintings use one system of fluting at a right angle to another, creating a spherical space. I continue to mix and use progressions of individual colors to create the iconic visual reactions associated with Op Art.

My two styles continue to evolve and are beginning to influence one another. In my present work, I enjoy contemplating and calculating how the two styles may be unified into a single style in the future.
