Family paintings

Untitled

This is a 24×36″ oil on canvas painting. With the frame it measures 30×41″ It is based on a photograph taken in 1927 in Mineral , Ohio. I assume they were dressed for Easter? The photo was taken by their father as he was very interested in the art. All the members of this side of my family were active with painting, leatherwork, embroidery, and playing music. I grew up seldom seeing this side of my family. But it seems nature wins over nurture in my case. As an older adult, I discovered how much we have in common. The elder girl in this painting is my Aunt Virginia. She made me an “artists” apron for my 5th Christmas. Her mother gave me my first set of charcoal and drawing pencils for my 7th. She gave me my first set of oils when I was 12, as she was going blind and could no longer paint the landscapes. This is part of a series I was making for myself…to thank them for recognizing me in this way, and to consider the DNA of it all?
