Taking a cue from a famous 1833 engraving by Adolf Vollmy that depicts a Leonid meteor shower – I’ve added a more minor meteor shower to a scene of Tree Swallows playfully flying in my back yard at sunrise. In my observations, tree swallows are equally fierce and graceful – effective aerial insectivores (although not as mighty as the dragonfly).

Bright, Flight, Fall

Woodcut, cut paper, thread, dowel, book cloth on Japanese mulberry paper
Image size: H 35 x W 24 inches
Paper size: H 42 x W 30.5 inches
2019 unique print
A reaction to the alarming global insect population decline, I cut the shapes of moths to create light/shadow conveying the idea of “presence” and “absence,” while thinking about light pollution. A few of the cut shapes are sewn back onto the paper, and some are scattered below the piece. The main subject of the woodcut is a spawning event of Mayflies and the resulting spring feast for swallows that I witnessed back in 2014 along the shore of the Ohio River in Louisville.

Queen honey bees are pretty remarkable inspiring loyalty and leadership in their hive. My grandmother brought together our family while also being remarkably talented, especially with textiles. Her home-made “Grandmother’s Garden” quilt pattern was the inspiration here.

Earth Shine: Solar Eclipse

3-color original print with hand coloring on Rives BFK white paper.
Limited edition of 55.
Image size: H 6 x W 6 inches
Paper size: H 10 x W 10 inches
In great anticipation of the Solar Eclipse on April 8th, 2024, I wanted to honor the quiet and moving experience I witnessed in 2017 in Cookeville, Tennessee. I pushed the Earth shine (light reflected off the Earth and onto the Moon) to give greater definition to the Moon. The Moon blocks the Sun for a few minutes casting a 100-mile wide shadow in the Path of Totality.
