Be a Spark
40" x 37" x 1"
Made September 2020
$4000
There is a history of artists creating socio-political art to help the public understand particular social or political issues, and quilters have also participated in creating Protest Art. Long before I was a quilter I remember being moved by the creation of the AIDS quilts that were displayed on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
Much like social issues, quilts literally have many layers and for this one I added even more layers and not all of them are completely flat. I also wanted the letters to be subtle so that people would be literally drawn into the piece to read it.
Thematically, I chose a match flame to represent shining a light in the darkness. A flame is delicate but it has potential; will it grow into a fire or will it be blown out? One flame by itself can only be so bright. But if that flame sparks someone else, who sparks yet more people, the cumulative effect can be brilliant.

The sheers are red, blue, orange, green, and pink. All squares are quilted in with an "x" through the square with a red and blue variegated thread. It has a no-show, knife-edge binding.
There is a history of artists creating socio-political art to help the public understand particular social or political issues, and quilters have also participated in creating protest art. Long before I was a quilter I remember being moved by the creation of the AIDS quilts that were displayed on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Much like social issues, quilts literally have many layers and for this piece I added more than the usual number of layers by sewing sheer fabric on top of letters also made of fabric.
As the country seems to become more and more divided, the concept of nationalism has become confused with patriotism and certain groups want to limit the rights for people who are different than them. I think the image and the quote help this quilt literally speak for itself.
