Florida Springs 2 bronze and fused, slumped glass H 6′ W3′ D 8″ 2019
These sculptures were created to honor the amazing freshwater springs that emerge from underground aquifers. Childhood tactile and visual memories of swimming in these springs and exploring the surroundings have shaped the sculptures. The purity and amount of the water emerging from the springs is threatened by agricultural pollution and over use of the water by growing populations and commercial bottling companies.

This view shows the type of vegetation that surrounds many of the threatened springs, some animals that live in those environments and the clarity of the glass “water”. Textures, in the bronze portions of the sculptures, are emphasized and contrast to the smoothness of the glass “water”.

In the “water” portion of the sculpture is that algae growing due to fertilizer run off in the once crystal clear and pure water of the springs?

Palmetto plants are frequently found in the surrounding environments of the springs. Just as there are strong childhood memories of the sensations of swimming in the springs, there are also strong memories of “building” structures with these wonderful plants. The “water” of this springs may be pretty colors but it is no longer clear as it should be.
