Mickey Mencin » Ohio Artist Registry

Mickey Mencin is a Lakewood, Ohio printmaker creating hand-carved, hand-pulled, and hand-colored prints in a modern arts and craft style.​

Mickey uses the “old school” method of Lino printing to create her art. Lino printing is a printmaking technique that emerged in the early 20th century. The technique is a form of block printing, i.e. carving a design or pattern into a linoleum or wood block that is inked and printed on various materials. Her process is below:

• Carve a design using Pfeil and Flexcut tools on Blick battleship gray linoleum

• Ink the block using Speedball’s Supergraphic Black professional relief ink

• Press the print using a Blick Etching Press, Woodzilla handmade Lino press or by hand using a Speedball Baren

• Pull the print on archival papers and Buckram, a stiff cotton fabric

• Hand-color the print using gouache, acrylic, watercolor or Japanese markers

Her subject matter features hyper-graphical botanical compositions, abstract nature studies, architectural landscapes and interesting finds from beaches, parks and walks in her neighborhood and beyond.

Mickey is also founder of Made in Lakewood, an organization that places local art in local places. Its’ mission is to celebrate the art and artists who live, work and create in Lakewood, Ohio and the businesses and organizations that support them.

Prior to printmaking, Mickey was a brand director who led content, creative and brand teams at KeyBank, Hyland Software, and her own agency, Ideamarks. ​

Mickey holds degrees in Journalism and Graphic Design from Kent State University. She is a member of the Ann Arbor Guild of Artists & Artisans, Zygote Press, The Morgan Conservancy and former director of Beck Center for the Arts.​​

Exhibits, commissions and juried art shows include creating the program prints for Cleveland’s Les Delices 2022-23 Season, “Foot Squared” exhibition at Worthington Yards, Blackbird Baking Co., Screw Factory Art Show, Boston Mills Arts Fest, Ann Arbor Art Fair, Cain Park Arts Festival, Lakewood Arts Festival, Berea Arts Fest, Rocky River Fall Arts Festival, Downtown Lakewood Spring Stroll, Beck Center for the Arts and Zygote Press’ “Women Who Print” exhibition at Metro Health Center.
