The Ohio Artist Registry (OAR) is an exciting opportunity for artists to share their work, connect with the creative community, and establish an online presence—all on a free, virtual platform! The OAR encourages artists working in all art forms, throughout Ohio and beyond,  to create a profile, which allows them to better promote themselves and their work. Being listed in the OAR provides artists with new opportunities to share their work with clients, galleries, patrons, and audiences. A listing in the OAR does not confer an endorsement, approval, or verification by the Ohio Arts Council.

Bio

Michael Anderson is a painter whose current work investigates combines representation, minimalism, and the creation of mood. He first developed an interest in painting over forty years ago, studying formally and completing most of the requirements toward a BFA in painting.

For two decades, Anderson maintained a studio practice, producing primarily representational work before stepping away from painting in 2004. After a long hiatus, he returned to oil painting last year with a different objective.

His current work moves can be representational or minimalist, using landscape and form as to suggest a mood or emotion. Rather than describing a scene, Anderson’s paintings aim to evoke a something more, inviting the viewer to look for the story.

Artist Statement

My work tries to create tension between calm and conflict, which allows me to influence the viewer’s perception. There are some marks on a canvas that communicate stillness while others may cause conflict. I’m drawn to landscapes as a way to arrange marks so they will tell a story, not as a source of representation.

The marks made on a canvas transmit color and value, so every painting must have the appropriate portion of each to solidify the composition and make it sensible. If done correctly, the painting becomes a tour for the observer to move about on their way to discovery.

I like minimalism subjects as an alternative staring point to landscapes because I can combine them and produce art that sits in a special place. That special place is only marginally recognizable as representation.

My goal always is to create an emotion, that slowly reveals itself to the viewer.
