The Ohio Artist Registry (OAR) is an exciting opportunity for artists to share their work, connect with the creative community, and establish an online presence—all on a free, virtual platform! The OAR encourages artists working in all art forms, throughout Ohio and beyond, to create a profile, which allows them to better promote themselves and their work. Being listed in the OAR provides artists with new opportunities to share their work with clients, galleries, patrons, and audiences. For more information, contact Kathy Signorino, artist programs director, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 614-728-6140.
Gwen Waight/ found object assemblage:
Gwen has been a collector of found treasures for many years. She creates unique assemblages with these found objects often using boxes, ephemera, rusty metal and coveted old hardware. Gwen has been an active artist since her early years working in her father’s pottery studio where she learned her appreciation of 3D space. She completed her art degree from the University of Iowa, studying sculpture and ceramics. Her assemblages and construction are sometimes figurative, but more often abstract.
Working with found objects is an aesthetic that evokes memories and nostalgia; sometimes common or often unique to each individual viewer. There is a knowing and a genuine understanding that I use to create my work. I assemble pieces that are wholly new but strangely familiar. Recognition of everyday utilitarian objects gives a viewer simple perceived understanding and perception but when combined with each lived experience and my assemblage of varied objects the piece becomes much more complex and layered. At first glance people tend to play a sort of ‘eye spy’ game with my work but over time I hope the interplay of the assembled pieces makes them want to know more.
