Oriental Lanterns

Wood Lantern, Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, Koto, Japan.

Known for its tunnels of hundreds of tori gates, visitors to the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine take pictures of the gates and walk through them. But there are many other beautiful images to enjoy as one looks at details. Global lanterns are ubiquitous in Japanese temples; however, lanterns attached to the sides of these temple buildings are rectangular and blend perfectly with the architecture surrounding them. The craftsmanship is exquisite as no efforts were wasted hundreds of years ago in crafting them. Focusing on something other than that which seeks and dominates will allow you to enjoy the beauty that first appears to be significant.

Gold Temple Lanterns, Koyasan, Japan.

Koyasan is one of the most sacred areas in Japan. In the mountains not far from Osaka, it is the resting place for thousands of monks and dignitaries, the first dating back thousands of years. Sunlight filters through giant cedars, giving the impression one has entered a cathedral. The crisp air is filled with reverence and mystery. This close focus of the temple reflects the wisdom that light can pierce the dark and mysterious

Yellow Japanese Lanterns Line Temple Wall, Osaka, Japan.

Temples can be enjoyable places to spend time. Being religious is not a requirement for entry. Colorful or muted, plain or encrusted with intricate decorations, most offer peaceful and quiet places. This artist finds them a source of endless visual beauty coupled with senses of wonderment and mystery. You will feel similarly visiting these magnificent places.

Lantern Shop, Hoian, Vietnam.

Wandering about the ancient city of Hoian, this artist feels like a kid in a candy store. Little streets lined with colorfully painted buildings enveloped many lanterns and beautiful vignettes. With motor vehicles banded, the pace of the village is at walking speed. Take your time to appreciate the patina of an area over a thousand years old. Here, a shop window filled with lanterns creates a striking, brightly colored pattern, capturing the mood and spirit of this Enesco World Heritage site.

Lanterns Dancing On Water, Glass Temple, Changhua, Taiwan.

This unique best beauty After Dark. Constructed of colorful stained glass, the intensity and richness of the color are breathtaking. Like stained glass, everyone has muted color. With the introduction of a light shining through them, both will be miraculously transformed into something far more brilliant and beautiful. Often, this magnificent glow will be reflected around them, transforming them into things of beauty! Has the light enriched your life?

The Allure Of Japanese Lanterns, Otoria Jinja Shrine, Toyko, Japan.

Personally experiencing the red lantern in the background, one would discover as the lantern in the foreground, themselves dwarfed by its size. Differences such as big and little, combined to make a whole, are not a detriment in creating beautifully complex compositions.

Dancing Lanterns, Yasaka Shrine, Kyoto, Japan.

It is common to enter a temple constructed thousands of years ago. Even if weatherworn and needs attention to repainting, lanterns swaying in the breeze contribute a sense of life. A comfortable feeling you are not alone among signs, symbols, and unfamiliar buildings. Whether in the daytime or glowing at night, lanterns such as these form a line of spiritual gaiety capable of bringing a smile to even nonbelievers.

Colorful Lanterns Over Doorway, Hoian, Vietnam.

What a delight for this artist to spend time in a town that embraces color and is not timid in showing it. Way too frequently, I find myself in areas where the predominant color of houses is gray or tan, and the palette is reflected in the vehicles in the driveways. It is hard for me not to experience better moods and more optimistic ideas when surrounded by color. This simple photo painting is full of life because of color. A visual reminder of the old song, "Let The Sun Shine I. "

Green Lanterns, Kasuga-Taisha Temple, Nara, Japan.

Fewer places in Japan have as many temples as the little town of Nara, a short train ride from Osaka. Like the freely roaming deer, keeping track of so many temples is hard. Something there was with this eclectic line of lanterns swaying in the breeze I could not resist. So, pausing for a while to enjoy became entertaining and refreshing. May you experience a joyous pause as you view this photo painting!
